The Art of the French Revolution

The art of pre-revolutionary France was decidedly frivolous in its subject matter and deliciously detailed in style. Paintings were commissioned by the wealthy for their grant chateaus and palaces in delicate pastel colors. This period of art was called “rococo,” from the French decorative term rocaille, and was highly ornamental. Common subjects of rococo art include young lovers, pastoral scenes, outdoor games, and then-fashionable portraits. Cherubs are omnipresent in rococo art, and more often than not are accompanied by scrolls, inexplicable clouds of flower petals, and swathes of fabric. One highly recognizable piece of Rococo art is a painting called The Swing by Jean Honor-Fragonard. The subtle sexual undertones of the painting – it’s implied that the woman isn’t wearing undergarments – made the painting a scandalous success when it debuted.

Rococo decorative art was exceptionally elaborate and very expensively made. Rococo pieces are the pride of decorative arts collections in museums worldwide. The palace of Versailles was decorated in the Rococo style. Versailles is ornately detailed, and can best be described as a palace of luxury overload. Floors are made of intricately tiled panels of marble. Mirrors are several feet tall, and many feature intricate cherub sculptures at the corners. Busts of Roman emperors are prominent as the classical period was very fashionable in the eighteenth century. Even sofas, upholstered in finest floral silk are trimmed by gilded wooden sculptures of leaves. Asymmetry was popular in Rococo designs, which meant that the leaves on one side of the sofa were unlikely to mirror exactly the leaves on the other side.

A shift in the political climate meant a shift in aesthetic preference. While there certainly was nothing wrong with the art of the Rococo era, the lower classes understandably found fault with the unequal distribution of wealth in French society. Marie Antoinette famously had little regard for the welfare of her subjects. Rococo art represented to the French revolutionaries all that was wrong with French society at the time. It was no wonder then that the Revolutionaries set about hacking to pieces Rococo portraits of nobility as they stormed the estates of Paris.

IT WAS a breathtaking sight as over 12,000 cartoon fans packed the Kanteerava Stadium in Bangalore to cheer their favourite Toon stars at Cartoon Network’s ‘Toon Cricket-The Ultimate Showdown’. The Ultimate Hero -Ben 10, captain of the Benultimates team led his team to a resounding victory over Aggregor’s Agressors as he hit the winning shot of four runs in the super over.

In its seventh successful run, Cartoon Network’s most celebrated event fulfilled its promise of maximum fun and excitement as our world famous Toons captained by the youngest superhero Ben Tennyson from Ben 10 and the evil Mojo Jojo, from The Powerpuff Girls battled at the pitch. Ecstatic kids present at the packed stadium cheered their favourite toons till the nail-biting finish.

Adding to the excitement and experience of the evening was the digital augmented reality applications which had kids participating live in Toon Cricket contest and enjoying games, video and wallpapers on their mobile phones while watching their favourite toons sweat it out on the pitch.

Taking the action and fun to the virtual world for the first time, kids present at Toon Cricket got a chance to be just like their favourite hero, Ben 10 through an innovative Augmented Reality (AR) application. The funky AR stall called the ‘Cartoon Network Digital Zone’ at the stadium had kids being clicked wearing the virtual Ultimatrix.

The fun didn’t stop here as Toon Cricket went more toony! Cartoon Network became the first kids’ network in India to have a live mobile application at Toon Cricket that was activated once the kid reached the stadium. All the kid had to do was send an SMS CNTC to 58558 and download the Toon Cricket application that had wallpapers, video and information about Toon Cricket. To start the application, kids had to just point their phone cameras at the intARact code on the invite and they got playing. Also as kids present at the stadium switched on their blue-tooth, they received an application and got to partcipate in Toon Cricket contest live and began downloading cool Toon Cricket wallpapers as they watched their toon stars play on the field!

Amplyfying the experience, was the laser show that made Toon Cricket an outstanding event in the history of the Toon World. This year in ‘Toon Cricket-The Ultimate Showdown,’ Ben Tennyson had invited his plumber agent friends to join him and help protect the world in the Ultimate Showdown against the evil aliens, that Aggregor was threatening to unleash who will harm the environment and destroy the world using the help of his deputy Mojo Jojo. So Ben 10 had challenged him to a game of cricket to save the planet and he invited help from kids to become plumber agents!

As part of the on-air Toon Cricket contest that was rolled out we had a grand prize winner – Devyanshu Rout from Bangalore. Devyanshu got the opportunity to be treated like a superstar as he and his friends/family were escorted in a sleek Mercedes filled with bundles of surprises that include exclusive Cartoon Network goodies. Once at the venue, he got a special seat in a VIP enclosure with the best view in the field.
